On May 8, 1993, the community of Potts Camp, Mississippi, was shaken by the tragic death of its Chief of Police, Joe M. Thomason, a 43-year-old male. The incident unfolded at approximately 3:30 PM when Chief Thomason conducted a traffic stop on a drunk and reckless driver on US Highway 78, about two miles from the town. During the stop, the driver fatally shot Chief Thomason in the head with a. 45 caliber handgun.
The individual responsible for the shooting was quickly apprehended.
In a grim turn of events, the perpetrator was identified as a former friend of Chief Thomason's own son, a young man who had reportedly spent nights at the Thomason family home in the past. Following his arrest, he was charged with capital murder.
Ultimately, the suspect pleaded guilty to the charge of capital murder. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, ensuring he would be held accountable for his actions. Chief Thomason was a veteran of the United States Navy who had served in Vietnam and had a long career in law enforcement, with 18 years of service. He had been with the Potts Camp Police Department for a year and had previously served with the Verona and Fulton Police Departments. He was survived by his wife and three children.
