On May 8, 1993, the community of Potts Camp, Mississippi, was shaken by the tragic death of its Chief of Police, Joe M. Thomason, a 43-year-old male. The incident unfolded at approximately 3:30 PM when Chief Thomason conducted a traffic stop on a drunk and reckless driver on US Highway 78, about two miles from the town. During the stop, the driver fatally shot Chief Thomason in the head with a. 45 caliber handgun.
