On July 8th, Fitzgerald was at his job at the Lockheed Martin aircraft parts plant, a place where he had worked for 23 years, when a coworker, Doug Williams, began a shooting rampage. Fitzgerald was reportedly the first person Williams encountered.
In a heroic attempt to de-escalate the situation and calm his colleague, Fitzgerald was fatally shot in the face.
The devastating event saw Williams, who was known to have expressed racist sentiments, move through the facility, firing a shotgun at his colleagues.
