In the late hours of a July evening in 2014, the life of 41-year-old Lamont Daniel Hayes was tragically cut short in a violent home invasion in Gulfport, Mississippi. On July 22nd, two masked individuals, Jalen Williams, 19, and Rashad Johnson, 17, forced their way into Hayes's Carson Drive home with the intent to rob him. They believed Hayes was in possession of money raised from a recent charity basketball game he had helped organize.
At the time of the intrusion, Hayes was at home with his wife and their three children, ages two, six, and thirteen.
The assailants first encountered Hayes's older children before finding his wife in the shower. The commotion awakened Hayes, who had been asleep with his youngest child. A struggle ensued between Hayes and the intruders. During the altercation, Hayes managed to pin Williams to the floor. Williams then slid a. 40-caliber gun to Johnson, who shot Hayes twice in the legs. One of the gunshots struck Hayes in the groin, causing a fatal wound. While the chaos unfolded, Hayes’s teenage child escaped through a window and ran to a neighbor’s home to call for help. Police arrived to find signs of a struggle throughout the house and Hayes near the door, gravely wounded. He was transported to a hospital where he died a few hours later.
The investigation quickly led Gulfport police to Williams and Johnson. A key piece of evidence was a text message Williams sent to a friend stating, 'home invasion gone wrong.' Initially, Williams denied his involvement but later confessed that he and Johnson had gone to the house to commit a robbery. Johnson also provided a statement to the police, admitting to his role in the fatal shooting. A third individual who had allegedly planned to participate in the home invasion reportedly had a change of heart and did not enter the home, later providing a statement to the police.
In the subsequent legal proceedings, Rashad Johnson pleaded guilty to first-degree murder on March 16, 2017. His sentencing was postponed so he could testify against Jalen Williams. Following a trial where the jury deliberated for about an hour and a half, Jalen Williams was found guilty of capital murder. On March 24, 2017, a judge sentenced him to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Due to their ages at the time of the crime, prosecutors did not seek the death penalty for either Williams or Johnson. The community remembered Lamont Hayes as a devoted husband, father, and a man known for his willingness to help others.
