On the night of July 9, 2020, what was initially reported as a
motorcycle accident at Michigan Avenue and Monroe Street was soon revealed to be a grim crime scene. First responders found Quincy Smothers in the road, not with injuries from a crash, but with multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene, launching a homicide investigation into what police determined was a targeted shooting.
The Gulfport Police Department's investigation pointed to a suspect, Samuel M. Bridges. A critical breakthrough came when a witness identified Bridges as the shooter and led police to the murder weapon. Investigators also discovered Bridges' DNA at the crime scene, strengthening the case against him. The investigation suggested the murder was tied to broader criminal activities, including drug trafficking and gang-related violence. Bridges, who had a prior arrest record, was subsequently arrested and charged with the murder of Quincy Smothers.
In a turn of legal events, Samuel Maurice Bridges pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter in July 2022. He also pleaded guilty to an armed robbery that occurred in 2019. Circuit Court Judge Randi P. Mueller sentenced Bridges to a total of 40 years in prison for both crimes. At the sentencing, the judge acknowledged the profound loss for both families involved, stating, “Two families have lost a loved one, one to the grave and the other to penitentiary.”
