In the winter of 2014, just two days before Christmas, a tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a Walmart in Clarksdale, Mississippi, that would cut short the life of a young man. Brandon Smith, a 26-year-old Black male, found himself in the midst of a heated argument between several individuals on December 23rd. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation and act as a peacemaker, Smith intervened.
His efforts to quell the dispute were met with gunfire. Christian Allen, who also went by the name Trey Pulley, opened fire during the altercation. The bullets struck Brandon Smith, fatally wounding him, and also injured two other people in the vicinity. The sudden violence shattered the holiday season for a family and sent shockwaves through the Clarksdale community.
In the aftermath of the deadly shooting, law enforcement identified Christian Allen as the primary suspect. He was subsequently arrested and faced serious charges for his actions that day. The legal process moved forward, and Allen was charged with the first-degree murder of Brandon Smith, in addition to two counts of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the other two victims.
The case culminated in a trial in August of 2017. After hearing the evidence presented, a jury found Christian Allen guilty of the charges brought against him. For the murder of Brandon Smith, he was sentenced to life in prison. He also received additional time for the two counts of aggravated assault, ensuring that he would be held accountable for the entirety of the violence he inflicted in the Walmart parking lot. The conviction brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Brandon Smith, though the void left by his untimely death remains.
