On the evening of November 19, 2015, Suzanne Hogan, a 58-year-old White/Caucasian female, was at a Shell gas station at the intersection of Watkins Drive and Beasley Road in Jackson, Mississippi. She had recently relocated to Madison County and was employed as a financial manager at Entergy. While she was filling her car with gasoline after leaving work, her life was abruptly and tragically cut short.
In a senseless act of violence, Hogan was fatally shot in the head. Her death was not an isolated incident but part of a string of random shootings that terrorized the area that same night. The perpetrator, later identified as Zebulum Lael James, a 22-year-old civil engineering student at Jackson State University, had embarked on a violent spree. Another woman, 49-year-old Kristy Lynn Mitchell, was also killed in a separate shooting in Ridgeland, Mississippi, at the hands of James.
Law enforcement quickly apprehended James at an apartment complex in south Jackson shortly after the shootings. During his trial, James chose to represent himself and put forth a defense centered on a claim of mental illness at the time of the killings. Despite a preliminary evaluation that suggested he suffered from chronic paranoid schizophrenia, the prosecution argued that his psychosis was induced by marijuana use and that he was attempting to manipulate the justice system. The jury ultimately found him to be sane and convicted him of Suzanne Hogan's murder. A Hinds County Circuit Judge sentenced Zebulum Lael James to life in prison for the murder and an additional five years for shooting into an occupied vehicle, bringing a legal conclusion to the random act of violence that claimed two innocent lives.
