In the summer of 2016, a promising young life was cut short in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Corey Husband, a 20-year-old male, was discovered unresponsive inside a vehicle on June 26th in the parking lot of Mugshots Grill & Bar. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was rushed to Forrest General Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Husband was a former standout football player at Forrest County Agricultural High School and had continued his athletic career at Pearl River Community College with aspirations of transferring to a university.
The Hattiesburg Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, which was quickly determined to have occurred during a drug transaction. The investigation led to the arrests of James Malik Windham and Demethius Dixon, who were subsequently charged with murder and conspiracy to commit a felony. A third individual, Chadrick Dixon, was also arrested and charged with hindering prosecution.
The legal proceedings took a turn when the case was moved to federal court due to what was described as insufficient evidence for a grand jury indictment at the state level. In the federal system, James Malik Windham entered a guilty plea to a charge of aiding and abetting the carrying and use of a firearm during a crime of drug trafficking, which resulted in the discharge of the weapon and Husband's death. According to his admission, Windham had brought Demethius Dixon along as armed support for the drug deal that ended in the fatal shooting.
