In a tragic turn of events on August 18, 2016, a 27-year-old male, Joshua Lee McDonald, was fatally shot in his car in Mount Olive, Mississippi. The incident took place near Jamesville Road where McDonald and a companion, Edmond 'Loc' Clark, were engaged in working on McDonald's vehicle. It was during this time that they were approached by an individual who then shot McDonald.
Following the shooting, the suspect, identified as Devontae Easterling, took the initiative to turn himself in
to the authorities. He was met by police officers at his grandmother's residence, where he was arrested. During the arrest, a 9mm handgun was discovered in his back pocket and seized by the officers. Easterling was subsequently indicted for the murder of Joshua Lee McDonald in January of the following year.
The legal proceedings culminated in a jury trial in July 2018, where Devontae Easterling was found guilty of first-degree murder. As a result of the conviction, he was sentenced to life in prison. An appeal was later filed on behalf of Easterling, challenging the verdict on several grounds. However, the court found no errors in the trial and upheld the conviction, affirming the life sentence.
