In the late evening of February 27, 2017, the life of 25-year-old Deverick Lee Johnson was tragically cut short in Long Beach, Mississippi. Responding to reports of a shooting at approximately 7:40 p.m., Long Beach Police discovered Johnson lying in the street with a gunshot wound. Despite immediate medical attention, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident, which stemmed from a dispute over a stolen gun and money, quickly escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving the community in shock.
The investigation into Johnson's death swiftly led law enforcement to three suspects. The primary individual sought in connection with the shooting was 28-year-old James Wilson McDowell. Following the incident, McDowell evaded capture, leading to a tense, two-hour standoff with the Gulfport police SWAT team at a residence on Hewes Avenue the next day. The standoff concluded with McDowell's surrender, and he was taken into custody without further incident.
In addition to McDowell, two other individuals were implicated for their roles after the shooting. Michael Anthony Taylor, 29, of Long Beach, and Charity Roxanne McDowell, 29, of Gulfport, were both arrested and charged with accessory after the fact to murder. Following his arrest, James Wilson McDowell was formally charged with murder and booked into the Harrison County Jail, while Taylor and Charity McDowell faced their own legal proceedings for their involvement.
