In the spring of 2017, the city of Jackson, Mississippi, experienced a wave of violence that claimed the life of a local teenager, Rodney Byther. On April 18, the 17-year-old Black male was outside his residence on Ventura Drive, located near the intersection with Catalina Drive. The quiet of the residential street was shattered when Byther was targeted in a shooting incident. According to police reports, he sustained a single, fatal gunshot wound to the back.
