In the quiet town of Brooksville, Mississippi, the life of 22-year-old Chelsea Renee Pace was tragically cut short on August 1, 2017. A nursing student with aspirations of becoming a registered nurse, she was known for her deep love for her family and friends. On that fateful day, Chelsea was found dead inside her home, having suffered from multiple gunshot wounds.
The brutality of the act extended beyond her death; her body was then moved into the nearby woods and set on fire.
The horror of the incident was compounded by the fact that her 4-year-old son was also a victim of the violent attack, having been shot but miraculously surviving his injuries. Suspicion quickly fell upon Chelsea's 22-year-old boyfriend, Marcus Gardner. A manhunt ensued, and Gardner was apprehended at the crime scene just hours later. He was subsequently charged with murder and aggravated assault.
The case against Marcus Gardner proceeded to trial, where investigators and neighbors provided testimony. In June 2021, after a week-long trial, a Noxubee County jury took only 14 minutes to find Gardner guilty of the murder of Chelsea Pace and the attempted murder of her young son. For his crimes, he was sentenced to life in prison for the murder and an additional 20 years for the attempted murder charge. An appeal was later filed on Gardner's behalf, citing issues with a juror and witness cross-examination, but the appeals court upheld his conviction and sentence in August 2023.
