In the late afternoon of August 15, 2017, in Grenada, Mississippi, the life of 9-month-old Rashun Riley, a Black baby boy, was tragically cut short. Around 1:40 p.m., a drive-by shooting occurred on Adams Street. Multiple shots were fired from a passing vehicle, and at least one of the bullets penetrated the walls of the home where Rashun was inside. The young child was struck in the head.
Emergency services were dispatched to the scene, and Rashun was quickly transported by air ambulance to the University of Mississippi Medical Center-Grenada. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries. Authorities later clarified that the house where Rashun was located did not appear to be the intended target of the shooting. It is believed the gunfire stemmed from a confrontation between the occupants of the car and a neighbor. Several other people, including children, were inside the home at the time of the shooting, but no one else was injured.
The Grenada Police Department acted swiftly in their investigation. A vehicle matching the description of the one seen at the scene of the crime was stopped later that same day. The two occupants of the car, identified as 18-year-old Shaquille Chamberlain and 20-year-old John Brown III, were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shooting.
Following their arrest, both Shaquille Chamberlain and John Brown III were charged with murder. They were subsequently held at the Grenada County Jail without bond as the investigation into the senseless death of Rashun Riley continued. The community was left to mourn the loss of an innocent child caught in the crossfire of violence.
