In the early hours of Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the life of 17-year-old L'Zaiyah Jones was tragically cut short in Grenada, Mississippi. Around 1:46 a.m., Grenada Police officers were dispatched to the 300 block of South Levee Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Jones unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound.
Emergency medical services were called to the scene, but their efforts were in vain. Grenada County Coroner Douglas “Little Bobby” Yates pronounced the teenager dead at the scene. In accordance with standard procedure, Jones's body was sent to the Mississippi State Crime Laboratory for an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death. The police immediately began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
The investigation swiftly led to a suspect. On Friday, March 13, 2026, Grenada Police Chief George Douglas announced the arrest of 18-year-old Jerrian Mekhi Sykes Jr. in connection with the shooting death of L'Zaiyah Jones. Sykes, a resident of Grenada, has been charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Grenada County Jail on a $1,000,000 bond.
