In the autumn of 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the afternoon calm in a Grenada, Mississippi neighborhood, tragically ending the life of 17-year-old Alexander Trevone Farmer, who was known to his friends and family as Trey. On the afternoon of October 12, 2017, the young Black male was driving a vehicle on Adams Street when the shots rang out. Struck by the gunfire, he lost control of the car, which then crashed into a nearby home at the corner of Adams and Govan Streets.
Emergency services were quick to respond, and he was rushed to the hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The violence of that afternoon was not confined to a single victim. A 69-year-old man and his wife were also injured in the incident. The woman, who had been sitting on her porch, sustained serious injuries and had to be airlifted to a hospital for medical treatment. The chaotic scene left the local community in shock and mourning the senseless loss of a young life.
In the wake of the shooting, the Grenada Police Department launched an immediate and thorough investigation. Their efforts quickly led to the identification and apprehension of two suspects. Kelvin Mohead, who was 17 years old at the time, and 20-year-old Toddric Crawford were arrested in connection with the fatal shooting. Both individuals were subsequently charged with one count of murder for the death of Trey Farmer. In addition to the murder charges, they also faced two counts of aggravated assault for the injuries sustained by the elderly couple. The swift arrests brought a small measure of solace to a community grappling with the violent disruption of their peace.
