On April 7, 2018, law enforcement officials in the Dixie community of Hattiesburg, Mississippi, responded to a residence following reports of a fatal shooting. George Ralph Howe Jr., a male resident of Forrest County, was discovered dead from a single gunshot wound. At the scene, investigators were initially told that the death was a suicide, a narrative that seemingly explained the tragic event at the time. However, detectives harbored doubts about the circumstances surrounding the incident and refused to close the case, leaving the investigation open for years as they sought further answers.
For five years, the case remained unresolved as authorities worked to uncover the truth behind the fatality. The turning point in the investigation came when the Forrest County Sheriff’s Office joined a task force that provided access to advanced digital forensic technology. This collaboration allowed investigators to finally unlock and retrieve data from an electronic device that had previously been inaccessible. The data obtained from the device provided what authorities described as key evidence conclusive enough to contradict the initial suicide claim and substantiate a criminal charge.
On July 20, 2023, authorities arrested the victim's wife, Harriet Mooney Howe, at the age of 75. She was booked into the Forrest County Adult Detention Center and formally charged with first-degree murder in connection with her husband's death. Following her arrest, a judge set her bond at $1 million. The Sheriff's Office stated that despite the passage of time, their resolve to find answers had never wavered, ultimately leading to the reclassification of the death from a suspected suicide to a homicide investigation.
