In the winter of 2019, a disagreement in a Jackson, Mississippi street escalated into deadly violence, claiming the life of 38-year-old Julian Smith. On the night of Friday, January 5th, shots rang out, and when the chaos subsided, Smith had been fatally wounded. The gunfire was not only directed at Smith but also struck a nearby home, endangering others in the community.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to two individuals.
Jermarcus Morgan, who was 30 years old at the time, and 18-year-old Julian Hicks were identified as suspects in connection with the fatal shooting. Their apprehension brought a measure of progress to a case that had added to the city's growing homicide count.
Following their arrests, both men faced significant charges. Morgan was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and two counts of aggravated assault. Hicks faced charges of murder, shooting into an occupied dwelling, and two counts of aggravated assault, directly linking him to the death of Julian Smith.
