In the late afternoon of August 22, 2019, a dispute in a home on Shady Lane Drive in Jackson, Mississippi, turned fatal, claiming the life of 22-year-old Illyannaii Jahnette Dawson. A Black/African American female, Dawson was shot in the upper body during the altercation and was pronounced dead at the scene around 3:30 p.m. The Hinds County Coroner later confirmed that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the neck.
The investigation into the shooting led Jackson police to two individuals who were present during the altercation. Robin Dishmon, 38, and her 17-year-old son, Christopher Wilson, were subsequently arrested in connection with Dawson's death. Both were charged with murder, and authorities recovered two firearms from the residence as they worked to determine which one was used to fire the fatal shot. The specific relationship between Dawson and the mother-son duo was not immediately made public by law enforcement.
Following their arrests, both Dishmon and Wilson appeared in court for an initial hearing where they were denied bond. Despite his age, Christopher Wilson was charged as an adult in the murder of Illyannaii Dawson. The case drew considerable attention as the legal process began to unfold, leaving a family and community to mourn the violent and untimely loss of a young woman.
