In the fall of 2020, the life of 13-year-old Robert McKenzie Luckett II was tragically cut short. The young man, who was from Canton, Mississippi, passed away on Friday, October 23, 2020, at the University Medical Center in Jackson. Robert, who had a passion for football, was remembered by his family who asked those attending his service to wear their favorite team jersey in his honor.
His death was the result of a shooting that had occurred two days prior, on a Wednesday evening. The incident took place at approximately 6:30 p.m. at a McDonald's in Canton, where Robert and others were in the drive-thru line. The gunfire that erupted claimed another life, that of 24-year-old Dakarrie Johnson, and left two other individuals in critical condition.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement began their investigation into what they believed was an act of retaliation for a previous incident that had occurred months earlier. Their efforts led to the arrest of a suspect on the same night as the shooting.
