On a late Halloween night in 2020, tragedy struck in Sardis, Mississippi, forever altering the lives of a local family. Cortayvious Norwood, an 18-year-old Black male, was fatally wounded in a shooting that erupted on Willow Road. The incident, which occurred on October 31, 2020, also left several other individuals with injuries, turning a night of festivities into one of violence and loss. The Panola County Sheriff's Office immediately launched an investigation into the late-night shooting, diligently working through the weekend to piece together the events that led to Norwood's untimely death.
The investigation into the shooting on Willow Road revealed a grim connection to another violent episode that unfolded shortly thereafter. Authorities believe a subsequent shooting at an apartment complex on Tubbs Road was a retaliatory act linked to the incident that claimed Norwood's life. While this second shooting resulted in several hospitalizations, fortunately, no additional fatalities were reported. In the days following the initial shooting, the Panola County Sheriff’s Office signaled that an arrest was imminent as they continued to gather evidence and pursue leads.
A significant development in the case came on November 5, 2020, with the arrest of Quindarrius Pitchford in connection with the shooting of Cortayvious Norwood. However, the path to justice was not straightforward. An arrest warrant for Pitchford was later issued in July 2021, indicating that he was at large. Acting on a Crimestoppers tip, the U.S. Marshal Service located and apprehended Pitchford in Memphis, Tennessee, in November 2021. He was then slated to be returned to Panola County to face a charge of first-degree murder for his alleged role in the death of Cortayvious Norwood. Further details regarding his trial and any subsequent conviction have not been made publicly available.
