In Greenville, Mississippi, a 21-year-old man named Laquint 'Quint' Johnson had just celebrated his birthday weeks before his life was cut short on January 26, 2021. On that Tuesday morning, around 11:22 a.m., a knock was heard on a door in the 300 block of Beauchamp Avenue. The resident opened it to find Johnson in desperate need of medical help. As they waited for an ambulance, the witness helped him into the bed of a pickup truck and rushed him to the emergency room. Johnson had sustained three gunshot wounds to his right rib cage, hip, and knee. Before he succumbed to his injuries, he identified his attacker as 'Irving Carter.' At the scene on Beauchamp Avenue, police found a turquoise 9mm firearm and a set of keys that Johnson had left on the doorstep. In a nearby alley, they located his white Toyota 4 Runner, discovering shell casings near the driver's side door and inside the vehicle.
As investigators processed the initial scene, they were notified about a second person with a gunshot wound in the 300 block of Poplar Street. There, they found 19-year-old Fabulous Carter, who had been shot in his right knee. The investigation revealed that after the shooting, Carter had called a friend to pick him up near a local hardware store. The friend transported him to Poplar Street and, after Carter confessed to shooting someone, urged him to go to the hospital, but he refused. Carter was subsequently arrested and taken to the same hospital where Johnson was fighting for his life.
During questioning, Fabulous Irving Carter admitted to a calculated and cruel plan. He confessed to police that he had cultivated a romantic relationship with Johnson through Facebook Messenger for the sole purpose of luring him into a meeting to rob him. Carter detailed how he had arranged to meet with Johnson that day. Once they were parked in the alley behind Beauchamp Avenue, Carter pulled out a firearm and attempted to rob him. He admitted to shooting Johnson multiple times. A struggle ensued over the weapon, during which Carter was shot in his own leg. Johnson managed to flee the vehicle, and Carter told police he had intended to chase him but was unable to because of his injury.
Faced with a Capital Murder indictment, Fabulous Carter ultimately chose to plead guilty to the lesser-included offense of Second Degree Murder in Washington County Circuit Court. In February 2024, at the age of 21, Carter was sentenced for the fatal shooting. The court ordered him to serve 30 years in prison, which will be followed by five years of post-release supervision.
