Jamie Browning Iverson, a 67-year-old female, was working alone at Paul's Jewelry in Indianola, Mississippi, on the morning of April 23, 2021, a business she co-owned with her husband of nearly 43 years, Rodney Iverson. Shortly before 11 a.m., two men entered the store in what authorities believe was an attempted armed robbery. During the course of the crime, Jamie was shot. She was later pronounced dead after an attempt to transport her to a hospital.
The suspects, who were wearing masks, fled the scene in a black BMW. An intensive investigation was launched, involving the Indianola Police Department, the Sunflower County Sheriff's Department, the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, and U.S. Marshals. A tip eventually led law enforcement to the Jackson metro area, where two brothers, Daquarius Wright, 20, and Kenterius Wright, 19, were arrested on April 27, 2021.
Both Daquarius and Kenterius Wright were charged with capital murder and were held without bond. A third suspect, Phillip Harris, was also later arrested and charged in connection with the murder. In February 2023, the district attorney's office announced its intention to seek the death penalty for all three individuals accused in the death of Jamie Iverson. Prior to the deadly robbery, Daquarius Wright had been acquitted of a 2019 armed robbery charge in another jurisdiction, a verdict that had reportedly stunned the arresting officers in that case. The community of Indianola mourned the loss of the beloved local merchant, holding a vigil that was attended by over 100 people.
