In the quiet town of Indianola, Mississippi, a beloved 65-year-old Black female resident, Vanessa Cassandra Hollins, was tragically killed on Saturday, March 23, 2024. Known affectionately as 'Sand,' she was a devoted grandmother and a caregiver to many in her community. Her life was cut short in a violent act that also claimed the lives of her friends, 76-year-old Steve Scott and his 73-year-old wife, Sarah Scott.
The devastating events unfolded at the Scotts' home on Janet Davis Circle. Responding to reports of gunshots around 12:45 p.m., police discovered the bodies of Steve and Sarah Scott outside the residence. Inside the home, they found Ms. Hollins. All three victims had succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds at the scene.
Shortly after the discovery, authorities apprehended a suspect, 36-year-old Alton Williams, who was found sitting in a vehicle near the crime scene and was taken into custody without incident. Williams was identified as the grandson of Steve and Sarah Scott. He was subsequently charged with three counts of murder and one count of grand larceny and is being held in the Sunflower County jail without bond.
Further investigation revealed that Williams had a recent history with law enforcement. In February 2024, he was arrested near a local high school for carrying a concealed weapon and a significant amount of ammunition. At that time, he was released into the custody of his grandmother, who informed officers of his mental health issues. In the wake of the tragic killings, the Williams family released a statement expressing their profound grief and alluding to the impact of mental health-related tragedies.
