In the summer of 2021, a domestic dispute in Columbus, Mississippi, escalated into a tragic event that claimed the lives of a mother and her young daughter. On June 23rd, 49-year-old Erica Elaine Bush Brewer and her 8-year-old daughter, Jayda Brewer, were fatally shot at their home. The incident unfolded in the middle of the day, shattering the quiet of their neighborhood.
Erica, a manager at a local Cracker Barrel, was a graduate of Jackson High School and a member of the Mt. Olive M.B. Church. On that Wednesday afternoon, an argument between Erica and her 22-year-old son, Jaquenton Bush, turned violent. Responding to reports of gunfire, Columbus Police arrived at the family's residence to a harrowing scene. Young Jayda was discovered in the front yard, having apparently tried to flee the violence, but she had already succumbed to her injuries. Inside the home, officers found Erica critically wounded. She was airlifted to a hospital in Jackson but tragically died while in transit.
Jaquenton Bush was taken into custody at the scene of the crime. He was subsequently charged with two counts of capital murder in the deaths of his mother and sister. Following his arrest, he was held without bond at the Lowndes County Jail. In May of the following year, a Lowndes County grand jury indicted Jaquenton Bush on the capital murder charges, moving the case forward in the legal system.
