In the quiet community of Linwood/Dixon, Mississippi, the life of 15-year-old Mason David Lee Alford, a male, was tragically cut short on Monday, January 3, 2022. The teenager, who was homeschooled and of the Baptist faith, was at a residence on Road 406 with three other youths when the fatal incident occurred.
On that Monday afternoon, while in a room containing a gun safe, a 12-year-old was handling a single-barrel 20-gauge shotgun.
The firearm, which had an exposed hammer, discharged, and a single shot struck Mason in the back. In the immediate aftermath, the other teenagers at the scene acted quickly, placing Mason in a vehicle to seek help. They were met by emergency medical services near Williams Brothers, but despite their efforts, Mason was pronounced dead by the coroner.
The Neshoba County Sheriff's Office investigated the shooting, which was ultimately ruled an accidental death. Sheriff Eric Clark indicated that the investigation would continue to piece together the precise circumstances that led to the tragic event, including whether the youths were examining the firearm or if it was a situation of 'show and tell.'
