In the early evening of January 4, 2022, Demarcus McGinnis, a 14-year-old male, was fatally wounded in a shooting in Jackson, Mississippi. McGinnis was a student at Blackburn Middle School.
The incident occurred at the Eagle Gas Station located at the corner of Capitol Street and Ellis Avenue. McGinnis was seated inside a vehicle with three other teenagers, two 17-year-olds and a 15-year-old, when the car was fired upon.
He was struck by the gunfire and subsequently died from his injuries. There were indications that at least one of the other teenagers in the vehicle may have also been shot.
Law enforcement sources stated that the shooting was believed to be gang-related. The Jackson Police Department initiated an investigation into the homicide and began gathering information to identify possible suspects.
