In the quiet community of Moss Point, Mississippi, a grim discovery was made on the morning of March 1, 2022. In the yard of a residence on Elder Street, the bodies of two men were found, both having succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds. One of the victims was identified as 38-year-old Tremaine Moore, a male resident of Moss Point. The other man was 42-year-old Marcus Davis of Pascagoula.
The incident, which unfolded around 8:30 a.m., shattered the morning's calm and launched a double homicide investigation.
At the scene, law enforcement encountered Willie Alphonse Hurd, Jr., who had sustained a gunshot wound to his foot. It was Hurd who alerted the authorities to the presence of the two deceased men. As the investigation progressed, evidence gathered by Moss Point Police, with assistance from the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team, the Pascagoula Police Department Crime Scene Unit, and the Jackson County District Attorney's Office, began to point toward Hurd's involvement in the killings. A search of Hurd's home also uncovered marijuana.
Following his release from the hospital for his foot injury, Willie Hurd was taken into custody. He faced a series of serious charges, including two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Tremaine Moore and Marcus Davis. Additionally, he was charged with felony possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The case proceeded through the legal system, culminating in Hurd's conviction for both murders. In February 2024, a judge sentenced Willie Alphonse Hurd, Jr. to two life sentences, ensuring he would face the maximum penalty for his actions. The successful prosecution brought a measure of closure to the families of the two men whose lives were tragically cut short.
