On a Saturday afternoon, April 30, 2022, in Jackson, Mississippi, 14-year-old Johnquis Jashaun Kelly, a Black male, was with two friends, 18-year-old Antonio Gross and 17-year-old Montavis Primer. The three teenagers had gone to Sedgwick Court to pick up some shoes. It was around 2 p.m. when their plans were violently interrupted.
A vehicle approached the trio, and an individual armed with an assault-style rifle opened fire on them.
The sudden and brutal attack left Johnquis Kelly dead at the scene. His two companions, Gross and Primer, were critically injured in the shooting.
Johnquis was a ninth-grader at Murrah High School and was known for his love of video games and football. He was a member of the Jackson Bears Football Team and had previously attended McLeod Elementary and Chastain Middle School. In the wake of the tragedy, Jackson Public Schools provided counselors for students and faculty to help them cope with the loss of the young student.
The Jackson Police Department launched an immediate investigation into the homicide. Despite their efforts, no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, and the police have not publicly identified any suspects. The authorities have appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stoppers. The investigation into the death of Johnquis Kelly remains ongoing as police continue to search for leads to bring those responsible to justice.
