In the spring of 2022, a fatal encounter unfolded outside a Jackson, Mississippi apartment complex, ending the life of 49-year-old Jimmie Lee Pierce Jr. On the evening of May 16th, Pierce was sitting outside his home in the Northwest Plaza Apartments on North West Street when he was approached by three individuals with the intent to rob him. The group demanded his wallet, and when Pierce indicated he had nothing to give, the situation escalated tragically.
One of the assailants shot him twice in the chest. Emergency services transported Pierce to the University of Mississippi Medical Center, but he succumbed to his injuries. He was a Black male.
The investigation into the senseless killing quickly led authorities to three suspects: 15-year-old LeAndrew Williams, 19-year-old Corey Hodge Jr., and 24-year-old Bonny Fields III. It was later revealed that Fields was the uncle of Williams and Hodge. A family member reportedly recognized the vehicle involved and confronted the trio, leading them to turn themselves in to the police just two days after the shooting. Investigators learned that Williams had allegedly become enraged after discovering explicit text messages between his mother and Pierce, whom she was dating. This discovery is believed to have motivated the plan to confront and rob Pierce.
Following their surrender, Williams and Hodge were charged with capital murder, while Fields was charged as an accessory after the fact. During their initial court appearance, both Williams and Hodge were denied bond. Williams later pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. In June of 2025, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison, with 35 years to be served in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, followed by five years of post-release supervision. The case against Corey Hodge Jr. and Bonny Fields III continues to move through the legal system.
