In the quiet town of Eupora, Mississippi, a life full of promise was tragically cut short on the night of May 21, 2022. Jordan Gaston, a 29-year-old male, was fatally shot inside the Eupora Discount Store on West Roane Avenue. The incident, which shattered the late-night calm around 11:45 p.m., stemmed from a verbal dispute over a cellphone.
Gaston, an esteemed counselor at Winona Secondary School and a U.S. veteran who had recently earned his doctorate in education, was a respected and beloved figure in his community. He was known for his ability to light up a room and his dedication to both students and staff. His death left a profound void in the hearts of his family, friends, and the wider community.
Responding to a call of shots fired, Eupora police officers discovered Gaston unresponsive on the floor of the convenience store. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The investigation quickly led to the identification and immediate arrest of 26-year-old Joshua Oats as the suspected shooter. A 9mm handgun was recovered as evidence from the scene.
Initially charged with second-degree murder, Oats' case proceeded through the legal system.
