In the early hours of a Friday morning in McComb, Mississippi, the life of 17-year-old Dominic McCoy was tragically cut short. The young man, a student at McComb High School, was fatally shot just after midnight on July 15, 2022, at the corner of Burke and White streets. Police arriving at the scene discovered McCoy with a single gunshot wound to his chest, an injury from which he would not recover.
Known as a promising athlete who had garnered interest from colleges, his death sent ripples of grief through his family, friends, and the wider community.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to the identification of two suspects, Jessie Gray and Wayne Nobles III. Both were taken into custody the same day as the shooting. The McComb Police Department pursued murder charges against the two individuals, and a judge initially set their bond at $750,000 each. The community and McCoy's family looked on, hoping for justice to be served for the young life lost.
However, the legal proceedings took an unexpected turn. During a preliminary hearing in August 2022, a Pike County judge determined there was not enough probable cause to bind the case over to a grand jury. Consequently, Jessie Gray and Wayne Nobles III were ordered to be released from jail. Defense attorneys argued that McCoy was with two other minors at the time of the incident and that they had been on their way to see a girl when a shootout occurred with Gray and Nobles. The defense suggested that the two minors with McCoy could have been responsible for the fatal shot. Detectives testified that three firearms, including two semi-automatic rifles, were recovered from the vehicle occupied by McCoy and the two unnamed minors.
