In the small town of Meadville, Mississippi, a dispute over a seemingly trivial item escalated into a tragedy that claimed the life of 43-year-old Billy Darnel Brown on September 2, 2022. A disagreement with his brother-in-law, Richard Gibson, over a box of bullets spiraled into a physical altercation. The fight was broken up by Gibson's wife, who was also Brown's sister.
Following the initial separation, the conflict took a fatal turn.
Gibson produced a handgun and shot Brown, ending his life. The Franklin County Sheriff's Department, along with the county coroner, investigated the shooting, leading to Gibson's arrest.
In January of the following year, a Franklin County grand jury indicted Richard Gibson for the murder of his brother-in-law. The case proceeded to trial in May 2023. After hearing the evidence, a jury found Gibson guilty of first-degree murder. The court subsequently sentenced him to life in prison for the shooting death of Billy Darnel Brown.
