In the early morning hours of September 20, 2022, tragedy struck a neighborhood in Jackson, Mississippi, when 17-year-old LaGavin Jenkins Jr. was shot and killed while he was in his bed. The fatal shots were fired from outside his home on Myer Avenue, penetrating the walls and striking the teenager. Jenkins sustained two gunshot wounds to his upper body.
The devastating discovery was made by his grandmother. Police had been called to the area around 1 a.m. following reports of shots being fired. However, it was Jenkins' grandmother who later found him unresponsive in his bedroom.
In the wake of the shooting, the Jackson Police Department launched an investigation into the homicide. At the time, authorities reported that they had not identified any suspects and were unclear on a motive for the deadly assault. Law enforcement officials urged anyone with information regarding the shooting to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers to assist in their investigation. As of late 2025, there have been no publicly available updates regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the death of LaGavin Jenkins Jr.
