In the small town of Mountain View, Oklahoma, Deputy Sheriff Jesse Whitfield Morris, a 46-year-old White/Caucasian man, found himself in a fatal confrontation on a December day in 1900. On December 8th, he and another deputy responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the northwestern part of the town. Upon their arrival, they were met with gunfire as three men fled from the house.
The deputies managed to intercept the armed men and initially de-escalated the volatile situation. In an attempt to peaceably take them into custody, the officers accompanied the trio to a nearby saloon. It was within the walls of this establishment that the tense peace shattered, and a violent shootout erupted. During the exchange of gunfire, Deputy Morris was struck in the torso, the bullet inflicting a severe wound to his lung. His partner was also wounded, shot in the leg.
Despite the chaos, the three suspects were apprehended at the scene and subsequently charged with assault with intent to kill. For Deputy Morris, the gunshot wound marked the beginning of a long and arduous battle for his life. For over nine years, he endured the debilitating complications stemming from the injury. His suffering came to an end on February 3, 1910, when he succumbed to the long-term effects of the gunshot wound sustained in the line of duty. Deputy Morris was survived by his wife and their eight children.
