In the summer of 1907, a sense of duty led to the untimely death of Special Deputy Marshal L. P. Dixon, a 35-year-old male, in Wewoka, Oklahoma. On July 19th, Dixon was newly deputized, joining a posse in the search for three men. These individuals were not only wanted for a string of robberies but were also suspects in the murder of another lawman, Deputy Marshal John Morrison, just two days prior. The weight of this recent loss undoubtedly hung heavy in the air as the posse fanned out, determined to bring the fugitives to justice.
Dixon's role in the manhunt was to guard a road, a seemingly quiet post that would soon turn fatal. As he kept watch, two of the wanted men appeared. Dixon, upholding his sworn duty, commanded them to halt. When his orders were ignored, he opened fire, managing to wound one of the suspects in the leg. The encounter escalated in an instant as the injured man retaliated, firing back at Dixon and striking him in the chest. The wound proved to be mortal, and Special Deputy Marshal Dixon lost his life on that dusty road.
Following the deadly shootout, the wounded suspect was apprehended near the scene of the confrontation. His accomplice in the immediate vicinity was captured the following day, ensuring both men who were present at Dixon's death were in custody. The third suspect, connected to the murder of Deputy Marshal Morrison, was also eventually apprehended. In the legal proceedings that followed, both suspects involved in Dixon's death were charged with murder. The man who fired the fatal shot was ultimately convicted of manslaughter and received a two-year prison sentence. The third suspect, from the broader crime spree, was also convicted of manslaughter in connection with Deputy Marshal Morrison's death and was sentenced to five years. Dixon was survived by his wife and four children, who were left to mourn the loss of a husband and father dedicated to his community's safety.
