In the fall of 1994, a quiet Oklahoma town was shattered by the abduction of a young boy, a crime that would remain a painful mystery for decades. Six-year-old Michael Anthony Hughes, a first-grader at Indian Meridian Elementary School in Choctaw, was taken from his classroom at gunpoint on September 12, 1994. The kidnapper was a man named Franklin Delano Floyd, a man with a dark and convoluted past, who falsely claimed to be the boy's father.
Floyd's brazen act extended to abducting the school's principal as well, whom he later tied to a tree in a wooded area. The principal was found hours later, but Michael was gone without a trace.
For years, the fate of Michael remained unknown. Floyd, who was eventually apprehended in November 1994, offered conflicting and cruel stories, at one point claiming Michael was safe and being raised by others. This sliver of hope, however, was extinguished in 2014. From death row in Florida, where he was incarcerated for another murder, Floyd finally confessed to the crime that had haunted investigators and Michael's loved ones for two decades. He admitted to FBI agents that he had murdered the young boy on the very same day he had kidnapped him.
According to Floyd's confession, he had shot Michael twice in the back of the head. He claimed to have buried the boy's small body near the last exit on Interstate 35 in Oklahoma before the Texas border. Despite this confession, extensive searches of the area yielded no remains of Michael Anthony Hughes. Authorities have speculated that it is unlikely his body will ever be recovered. Floyd was serving a 52-year federal prison sentence for Michael's kidnapping and died in prison in January 2023, taking the final secrets of that tragic day with him.
