In the spring of 2007, a violent encounter in Oklahoma City claimed the life of Mark D. Clewis Sr., a 41-year-old Black man. On the evening of April 19th, outside his apartment at 6219 S. Independence Avenue, what began as a conversation between Clewis and two other individuals escalated into a fatal assault. The altercation turned brutal as he was pistol-whipped, beaten, and ultimately shot, leaving him to die at the scene.
The investigation that followed quickly centered on two
brothers. Authorities identified Fredrick L. 'Freddie' Sanders as the primary suspect in the shooting and believed his brother, Marcus L. Sanders, was also present during the incident. A warrant for first-degree murder was issued for Fredrick Sanders, who was 34 years old at the time. Both brothers already had outstanding felony warrants.
Despite the identification of a suspect and the issuance of a warrant, the path to justice proved to be complex. At one point, a suspect was charged with first-degree murder in connection with Clewis's death. However, those charges were ultimately dropped on October 19, 2007. To date, no other arrests have been made in the case, leaving the circumstances surrounding the death of Mark D. Clewis Sr. officially unresolved.
