In the late hours of a summer night in Tulsa, Oklahoma, a dispute that began within the walls of Shotgun's Bar on 41st and Peoria would tragically spill out into the parking lot, claiming the life of 21-year-old Jone Vang. On August 4, 2013, what started as an argument between members of rival Asian gangs escalated into a violent and fatal confrontation under the glow of the streetlights.
As the altercation moved outside, the verbal sparring gave way to physical violence, and tragically,
the drawing of firearms. In the ensuing chaos of gunfire, Jone Vang, who was identified by police as an active member of an Asian street gang, was fatally wounded and pronounced dead at the scene by responding officers. The incident cast a stark light on the presence and activities of such gangs in the Tulsa area, which authorities noted are often underreported.
The investigation into Vang's death led Tulsa police to 22-year-old Fue Xiong. Investigators connected Xiong to the scene after a vehicle seen dropping off another gunshot victim at a local hospital was spotted in his driveway. Surveillance was established, and when Xiong later entered the van and drove away, he was stopped and arrested. Xiong was not charged with the murder but with assault with a deadly weapon, after he allegedly picked up one of the guns used in the shooting and used it to strike another individual over the head.
In the wake of the shooting and Xiong's arrest, detectives continued their search for other individuals involved and the handguns used in the deadly fight. Authorities urged witnesses to come forward with any information that could help piece together the entirety of the events that led to Jone Vang's untimely death.
