In a tragic turn of events on January 14, 2014, Lemont Watson, a 36-year-old Black male, was fatally shot in a Tulsa, Oklahoma apartment. The incident unfolded in the presence of his girlfriend and her 11-year-old daughter.
The perpetrator was identified as Marquis Morris, the ex-boyfriend of Watson's girlfriend. Morris forcibly entered the apartment and opened fire, striking Watson.
Following the shooting, Morris abducted the 11-year-old girl, which triggered an Amber Alert.
Law enforcement quickly zeroed in on Morris as the primary suspect. He was subsequently apprehended and faced a litany of charges, including first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, and possession of a firearm after a former felony conviction. The violent nature of the crime, compounded by the kidnapping, drew significant media and public attention.
In November 2015, the legal proceedings came to a conclusion when Marquis Morris pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with Lemont Watson's death. This plea was part of a larger agreement that likely took into account the other serious charges he was facing.
