In a tragic turn of events, 19-year-old Abby Seals of Muskogee, Oklahoma, was found deceased on April 26, 2015. Her life was cut short by an act of gun violence in an apartment situated near Highway 69. Seals was discovered alongside 25-year-old Nicholas Rutherford; both had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. The grim discovery was made by Seals' boyfriend, who was returning from a road trip.
The apartment was located in an area known for a high crime rate, near an adult entertainment club and an adult toy store.
The Muskogee County Sheriff’s Office launched a double homicide investigation into the deaths of Seals and Rutherford. Their efforts led to a significant breakthrough on May 28, 2015, with the arrest of 24-year-old Eleno Maldonado Jr. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder.
Further investigation suggested that the motive for the killings may have been a dispute over money or drugs between Maldonado and Rutherford. It is believed that Seals was an innocent bystander, tragically in the wrong place at the wrong time. Despite the defense's argument that there was a lack of physical evidence such as DNA or fingerprints to link Maldonado to the crime, he was convicted on two counts of first-degree murder. In October 2016, Eleno Maldonado Jr. was sentenced to life in prison for the murders of Abby Seals and Nicholas Rutherford.
