In the spring of 2015, a tragic event unfolded in Seminole, Oklahoma, resulting in the death of a man named Scotty Candler. On May 30th, two men, John Douglas Knight and Matthew Armstrong, arrived at Candler's residence with a grim purpose. Both men were associated with the Indian Brotherhood, a prison-based gang, and had been ordered to question Candler about a separate homicide.
Carrying firearms, Knight and Armstrong intended to intimidate and assault Candler for information.
The situation quickly escalated when Candler's dogs ran out of the house, prompting Armstrong to discharge his weapon twice. In the ensuing chaos, John Douglas Knight entered the home and fatally shot Scotty Candler in the head. The two men then fled the scene, disposing of their weapons.
The investigation into Candler's murder led authorities to Knight and Armstrong. The case was handled by federal prosecutors due to its connection to a prison gang and the location of the crime in Indian Country. Both men ultimately faced justice for their roles in the senseless killing. Matthew Armstrong pleaded guilty to assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to do bodily harm in Indian Country and to using, carrying, and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.
John Douglas Knight, the man who fired the fatal shot, pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in Indian Country. He was subsequently sentenced to 210 months in federal prison for his part in the death of Scotty Candler. Court documents revealed that Candler had no actual involvement in the prior homicide he was being questioned about, making his death a tragic case of mistaken identity and gang-related violence.
