In the summer of 2015, a family tragedy unfolded in Midwest City, Oklahoma, culminating in the death of 46-year-old Jeffrey Alan Grafton Jr. A white male, Grafton was a dedicated family man and a respected pharmacist for United Healthcare. He had also served his country as a Marine during the Gulf War. His life was cut short on August 15, 2015, in a violent confrontation that stemmed from a desire to help his son.
The series of events leading to Grafton's death began when his son,
24-year-old Jonathan Grafton, found himself in trouble. Jeffrey Grafton, along with his cousin, off-duty Sapulpa police officer Lt. Trey Pritchard, went to a motel in Midwest City to recover a truck that had been stolen from Jeffrey. They tracked the vehicle to the motel using its GPS, which led to a fateful encounter with Jonathan.
Inside the motel room, a confrontation escalated into violence. During a struggle between father and son, Jonathan Grafton retrieved a firearm from a nightstand. In the ensuing chaos, Jeffrey Grafton was accidentally shot. Jonathan then shot and killed Lt. Trey Pritchard, who had drawn his own weapon. Following the shootings, Jonathan and his girlfriend, Daphne Mason, fled the scene.
Two days later, the couple was apprehended in Enid, Oklahoma, without incident after a citizen reported seeing them sleeping outside a convenience store. Jonathan Grafton was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder, as well as meth possession and assault and battery upon an officer. He was ultimately sentenced to 25 years in prison. Daphne Mason received a five-year sentence for being an accessory to murder. The tragic case highlighted the devastating impact of drug addiction on a family, and despite their profound loss, the Grafton family publicly expressed forgiveness towards Jonathan.
