In a quiet Tulsa, Oklahoma park, a grim discovery shattered the morning calm on June 14, 2016. Inside an SUV parked at Chamberlain Park, the bodies of 31-year-old Meshawna Jones and her friend, 26-year-old Markey Goff, were found. Both had been fatally shot. The tragedy was compounded by the presence of Jones' two young children, who were found unharmed inside the vehicle with their mother and her friend.
A passerby was alerted to the scene by a distressed 5-year-old boy who was seeking help.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly led Tulsa Police to a primary suspect. Just days after the discovery, authorities arrested 27-year-old Jacky Mayfield in connection with the murders of Jones and Goff. Mayfield, who had a prior criminal record, was charged with two counts of first-degree murder. Another individual, Rebecca Williams, was also implicated for her role in assisting Mayfield after the crime.
The legal proceedings that followed brought some measure of closure to the families of Meshawna Jones and Markey Goff. Rebecca Williams pleaded guilty to being an accessory to the murders, admitting that she helped Mayfield attempt to hide evidence after the shootings. She was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison for her involvement. Jacky Mayfield's case went to trial, where the prosecution initially sought the death penalty. His defense attorneys argued against this, citing his low IQ. Ultimately, a jury convicted Mayfield on two counts of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison.
