In the quiet city of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, the life of 39-year-old Debra Lynn Morgan, a dedicated Child Welfare Supervisor, was abruptly and violently cut short on November 7, 2016. A loving mother to her two sons, her untimely death sent shockwaves through the community and left a void in the lives of those who knew her. The devastating discovery was made by her 12-year-old son, Aiden, who returned home from a weekend with his father to find his mother deceased from a close-range shotgun
wound to the head.
The subsequent investigation into Debra's death quickly focused on her ex-husband, Richard Spaulding, and his fiancée, Sonia Weidenfelder. The former couple had been embroiled in a bitter custody dispute over their son, and a court hearing regarding Richard's failure to pay approximately $10,000 in child support was scheduled for the day after Debra was found murdered. Friends of Debra recalled her expressing fears that if anything were to happen to her, Richard would likely be responsible. This, coupled with the fact that her son had lost his house keys at his father's home the weekend of the murder, cast a dark shadow of suspicion on the couple.
As detectives delved deeper, a sinister plot began to unravel. Phone records revealed incriminating evidence, including deleted messages from Richard to Sonia and internet searches on Sonia's phone for images of gunshot wounds to the head. A recorded argument between the couple captured Sonia stating that she had committed the act for Richard and his son. Though Richard was believed to be the mastermind who acquired the shotgun, prosecutors argued that it was Sonia who pulled the trigger.
In April 2018, Sonia Weidenfelder was found guilty of first-degree murder. Richard Spaulding was also convicted of the same charge in a separate trial. In June of that year, both were sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of justice for the tragic and senseless end to Debra Lynn Morgan's life. Sonia Weidenfelder is currently incarcerated at the Mabel Bassett Correctional Center.
