On September 1, 2017, 33-year-old Billy Joe Gannon was found deceased in a residence in the 700 block of SW 50th Street in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. An investigation revealed he had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
A witness at the scene identified Robert A. Carmack as the individual who shot Gannon. Carmack, who was 29 years old at the time, was located and apprehended at his home, which was just two doors away from where the incident occurred.
During questioning, Carmack admitted to shooting Gannon multiple times.
Carmack later pleaded guilty to a charge of first-degree murder. In his plea agreement, it was noted that he had a history of depression and anxiety, for which he had previously received counseling and medication. Despite his mental health history, he confessed to intentionally shooting and killing Gannon. The specific motive for the shooting was not made clear in court records.
Following his guilty plea, Robert A. Carmack was sentenced to a suspended life sentence, with the requirement that he serve the first 30 years in the custody of the Oklahoma Department of Corrections. He was given credit for the 18 months he had already been incarcerated in the Oklahoma County Jail and waived his right to appeal the decision. It was recommended that he be placed at the Joseph Harp Correctional Facility, a medium-security prison equipped to handle inmates with mental health needs and those requiring substance abuse treatment.
