Jaleel Mixon, a 22-year-old Black man, was tragically killed on January 11, 2018, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The incident, which marked the city's first homicide of the year, took place in the 5000 block of North Osage Drive. Mixon had been shot, but was able to speak with police officers before he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Mixon's death led to the arrests of multiple individuals.
In February 2018, Marcus Cook was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder, along with gang-related offenses and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Two months later, in April, Cody Cummisky was also arrested in connection with the murder, facing similar charges. The following month, Marshayla Robinson was arrested on a complaint of being an accessory to the murder.
Prosecutors asserted that the motive for Mixon's murder was rooted in gang-related activities. The State of Oklahoma alleged that Marcus Cook killed Mixon in an act of retaliation, stemming from a belief that Mixon had betrayed him during a dispute within their street gang. Ultimately, Marcus Cook was found guilty of the murder of Jaleel Mixon and received a recommendation for a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
