On November 21st, that co-worker went to Mejlaender's apartment at 8311 E. 66th Street in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to check on him. Inside, a grim discovery was made; the 60-year-old man was found deceased.
An investigation into his death revealed that Mejlaender had been the victim of a homicide, having died from gunshot wounds.
The case has since remained unsolved, becoming one of Tulsa's cold cases. Investigators have considered robbery as a possible motive, as a valuable piece of art was discovered to be missing from his apartment. At the time of his death, Mejlaender was known to be a wealthy individual.
Despite the passage of time, law enforcement has not publicly identified any suspects in the murder of John Mejlaender.
