In the small community of Ada, Oklahoma, the life of 28-year-old Lane Scott, a man known for his love of bull riding and his work as a farrier, was cut tragically short on October 3, 2018. A dispute with a neighbor escalated into a fatal encounter, leaving a family and community to mourn a life ended too soon.
The events leading to Scott's death began with a disagreement over his girlfriend's pit bull.
The dog had reportedly been running loose, leading to a confrontation between Scott and his neighbor, K.C. Cole. The argument took place on County Road 3536, where an angered Scott approached Cole, who was seated in his truck. Reports indicate that Scott punched Cole, which was followed by the sound of multiple gunshots.
Cole is said to have fired approximately six shots at Scott. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the gunshot wounds proved to be fatal. Scott succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy as a free-spirited individual with a smile that could brighten a room. He was a graduate of Byng High School and had a passion for the rodeo, even representing the United States in Brazil on two occasions.
In the aftermath of the shooting, K.C. Cole was taken into custody by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation. He was subsequently booked into the Pontotoc County Jail and faced charges of first-degree manslaughter and shooting with intent to kill. Cole remained at the scene after the incident and cooperated with the investigators.
