In the small city of Ada, Oklahoma, a life was cut tragically short on the evening of October 10, 2019. Tyler Gene Melton, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot near the intersection of 6th Street and Hope Avenue. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:45 p.m., stemmed from a heated argument that took a violent turn. He was a White / Caucasian man, just days shy of his 24th birthday.
Authorities were called to the scene after multiple reports of gunfire.
Upon arrival, they discovered Tyler with a single gunshot wound. An investigation was immediately launched into what was clearly not a self-inflicted injury. The ensuing police work quickly pointed to a suspect, Jerry Gardner, a 34-year-old man.
The confrontation between Melton and Gardner escalated to the point where Gardner allegedly produced a firearm and shot Melton. In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement located and apprehended Gardner. He was subsequently arrested and faced the grave charge of first-degree murder. Following his arrest, Gardner was booked into the Pontotoc County Jail to await legal proceedings.
The community of Ada was left to mourn the loss of a young man known for his love of the outdoors and his helpful nature. His family, devastated by the sudden and violent loss, held a memorial service to honor his memory at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, followed by a burial at Franks Cemetery near Fittstown.
