In the early morning hours of July 7, 2019, a tragic encounter in Stillwater, Oklahoma, claimed the life of 23-year-old Jared Lance Roybal of Tonkawa. Roybal, a male, was driving a van with his brother and a 16-year-old boy when they came across two vehicles stopped in the roadway on the east side of Stillwater. An argument was taking place between two individuals, and as Roybal's vehicle approached, one of the men involved in the dispute turned his attention to them.
The man, later
identified as 29-year-old Darwin Lonestar Marcel Doyal of Stillwater, began yelling at Roybal. As Roybal started to respond from the driver's seat of his van, Doyal produced a handgun and fired a single shot, striking Roybal in the neck. In the immediate aftermath, Roybal's brother drove him to a nearby convenience store parking lot to seek help, and an employee called 911. Emergency medical personnel arrived at the scene at approximately 1:45 a.m. and transported Roybal to Stillwater Medical Center in critical condition. He was subsequently airlifted to OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead later that morning.
The investigation into the shooting led law enforcement to identify Darwin Lonestar Marcel Doyal as the primary suspect. He was arrested by the Stillwater Police Department at 4:15 a.m. on the same day as the shooting and was booked on a murder complaint. Doyal was later formally charged with first-degree murder, or alternatively, first-degree manslaughter, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. In March 2022, Doyal entered a guilty plea to the charges of first-degree manslaughter and possession of a firearm after a felony conviction. For the manslaughter charge, he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, with five years suspended, and he received a 10-year prison sentence for the firearm charge.
