In the small city of Tahlequah, Oklahoma, a tragedy unfolded that cut short the life of Rachel Dawn Gann Maxwell, a 40-year-old Caucasian woman known for her warm smile and devotion to her family. On the evening of November 6, 2019, the life she had built in the community where she had grown up came to a sudden and violent end. That night, Tahlequah Police were alerted to gunfire at a residence on Pamela Street.
The calls that came in painted a grim picture of a domestic dispute that had escalated to a fatal confrontation.
Rachel was at the center of this violence, shot at close range by her estranged husband, 37-year-old Eddie Ray Maxwell Sr. The single gunshot to her head was the culmination of what was described as a long and heated argument. One of the calls to the police was from a woman who identified herself as Rachel’s sister, frantically reporting that her sister had been shot by Eddie. The incident, rooted in domestic conflict, left a devastating impact on those who knew and loved Rachel, a woman who had dedicated her life to her children and her work in food service at Northeastern State University.
The aftermath of Rachel's death was swift and equally tragic. Following the shooting, Eddie Ray Maxwell Sr. engaged in a confrontation with the responding police officers. During this encounter, he was fatally shot by the authorities. The investigation that followed confirmed the events as a murder-suicide, with Eddie Maxwell being the sole suspect in Rachel's death. Consequently, no further arrests were made in connection with the case.
The community was left to mourn the loss of Rachel, who was remembered for her love of family, her faith, and the simple joys of life like camping and spending time by the river. Her funeral was held on November 15, 2019, where she was surrounded by her surviving children, Keisha Gann, Kiara Mabery, and Raheem Mabery, her mother, and her siblings. She was laid to rest at Ross Cemetery in Park Hill, Oklahoma, leaving behind a legacy of love and the memory of a smile that was so freely shared with everyone she met.
